Winspit Quarry in Dorset, England

About Winspit Quarry

Winspit Quarry is a fascinating and somewhat eerie abandoned stone quarry nestled near Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. For centuries, this site was a significant source of Purbeck limestone, used in iconic buildings across Britain. Today, it stands as a unique landscape where the remnants of human industry - deep rock cuts, stacked stones, and interconnected caverns - are being reclaimed by nature. Its dramatic, otherworldly atmosphere has also made it a popular filming location. While offering opportunities for exploration and photography, visitors should be aware that it is an unmanaged site with uneven terrain and a risk of falling rocks, requiring careful navigation. Winspit's intriguing network of man-made caves and tunnels is a key draw, offering shadowy depths to explore (with caution). The quarry's dramatic cliffs also attract climbers. Despite its industrial past, wildflowers and hardy coastal plants now thrive here, and the sheltered environment supports diverse wildlife. Visiting Winspit offers a chance to step back in time and witness the powerful interplay between human history and the natural world along the stunning Dorset coastline.

Getting there

From the small car park located near the entrance (postcode BH19 3LE), accessing Winspit Quarry is a relatively straightforward and short walk. From the parking area, you'll typically find a well-trodden path leading slightly downhill towards the main quarry area. The walk is generally easy, but the path can be a bit uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. As you descend, the dramatic rock faces of the quarry will gradually come into view. The main accessible areas of the quarry are within a few minutes' walk from the car park.
